Inspiring the next generation of leaders in the Caribbean

The Foundation and scholarship fund is established to support the WAWU community that Kertist A Augustus devoted his life to represent in Dominica and across the Caribbean. When Kertist passed away in 2021, his family was motivated to honor and remember the inspiring life he led by providing and encouraging youth to be leaders and pursue their dreams.

About the Kertist Augustus Foundation

The Foundation, will provide the opportunity for private and corporate donors to make a positive financial impact on the lives of young Dominicans, with limited resources to access higher education. This worthy contribution will benefit significantly the next generation of leaders.

The foundation was established to acknowledge the lifelong work and dedication of Kertiste Augustus. He devoted his life to the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union for over fifty years. His involvement in the trade Union movement in Dominica and the Caribbean region has been inspiring and significant. Hence the foundation was created as a contrivance to continue his work in helping the least fortunate.

This will be achieved in the form of scholarships offered primarily, to students whose parents are members of the WAWU (Waterfront and Allied Workers Union) community and the Dominica Grammar School (Kertist Augustus Alma Mater).

The scholarship recipients ten to twelve years old will be drawn from the national annual Secondary School Examination results. This scholarship will have a five-year duration with all expenses for the first year fully covered. However, the smooth continuance will be based on the academic performance of the awardee, who will be evaluated through a monitoring system.

In order to achieve the foundation’s objective, of inspiring the next generation of leaders and providing a bright future, full of possibility for each of its awardee. A mentoring program will be used. This includes regular face-to-face, online contact sessions, in-depth guidance and academic follow-up. We believe having someone to champion each awardee by providing valuable advice and support, will provide students with a hand-up rather than a handout. As a foundation we are confident our objectives will be realized.
